Manuela was born in November 08 th 2017 and had had to undergo sugery the 5 days after due to meconium ileus –that was the first time my husband and I ever heard about Cystic Fibrosis. She was firmly diagnosed about 20 days after the surgery through the golden-standard Sweat Test and the DNA exam revealed she’s a N1303K and R1162X heterozygous patient.
Manuela is our only child and we’re dedicated into providing her with the best conditions to live a normal life. We have strong adherence to her daily treatment and our hope is, by the time she is a young adult, next-generation CF medicine will be broadly available.
We live in Brazil, close to a city name Campinas, which houses one of the largest universities in the country, the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (a.k.a. Unicamp). Unicamp maintains their own hospital, where the community is served by professors and students and academic researches are developed. The Pediatrician department employees a multidisciplinary team dedicated to CF patients, with pneumologists, gastroenterologists, nutritionists and psychologists. Manuela is monitored by this group since birth and go through frequent appointments every year to ensure she is progressing as expected.
On a regular day, Manuela will undergo two physical therapist sessions for her lung function (inhalations plus exercises)
